Easy Hiking
The
park that protects the Carmanah Valley was born from
strife between environmentalists and loggers. It now
protects Canada's tallest tree, a 95-meter giant Sitka
Spruce. The park is very remote requiring a 2.5 hour
drive from Port Alberni over very rough logging roads to
get there. So these excursions start early to make the
most of the day!
There are well over 16,000 hectares of old growth forest
here. Some of the old Cedars are over 1000 years old.
And there are many giant Sitka Spruce trees that will
make you feel very small! Moss and ferns and cover the
trees and the forest floor. There is life in this forest
that exists only in old growth forest. It is a place out
of fairy-tales, of mystery and imagination.
The
hiking is not difficult, but there is some
hill-climbing, and there are some board-walks. Some of
these board walks have not been repaired since the
winter storms swept through the area.
Lunch, water, and snacks will be supplied. Bring insect
repellant, rain gear and a jacket or sweater in case it
is a cool day. Hiking boots are recommended. No sandals!
