One of the most popular
excursions!
Difficulty rating 1B
A
scenic drive in the Rainbird van along Sproat Lake
and down a mountain
river valley to Ucluelet , a village tucked into a
cove on the outside of Vancouver Island;
You
will be stopping at unique features along the way
for interpretation, birding, or to enjoy the
scenery.
And a
trip back on the MV Frances Barkley (an historic small
freighter owned by Lady Rose Marine Services) up a
West Coast fjord. It's a microcosm of the landscape
on Vancouver Island.
You can enjoy a
picnic lunch near the lighthouse at Amphitrite Point
before heading to the wharf for the trip back to
Port Alberni.
There are two other ways to enjoy this trip
You can take the
Frances Barkley to Ucluelet first, and meet the
Rainbird van for the trip back.
Another way to do
this is to start in Ucluelet, take the Lady Rose to
Port Alberni and have the Rainbird van return you to
your starting point two days later.
This
trip is offered on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from June to the end of
September.
Where there are mountains, there are waterfalls! On this
excursion, you'll hike to as many as five spectacular
waterfalls. You will also walk over a small suspension
bridge over one of them. Around some of the falls you'll
discover impressive old-growth trees. There is also some
history and native culture associated with some of these
falls.
Your guide has
lived and worked in the forests of this region for many
years. He will tell you stories and provide interpretive
detail throughout the trip. Or you can ask him about the
birds trees or flowers you are seeing. He has a wealth
of knowledge.
You'll have
lunch near the petroglyphs at Sproat Lake Provincial
Park. And after lunch you can walk to the petroglyphs
and learn a little bit about the First Nations in the
area.
If you're into
birding, there's also a chance to see the unique
American Dipper, a perching bird that climbs about under
the water and has a wonderful song. Of course you will
almost certainly see Bald eagle on tour trip. They are
quite common in the area.
On this
excursion, you'll learn about the role of water in
rainforest ecosystems. There is a wonderful ambience by
a waterfall on a hot day in the Alberni Valley!
A hike to a
remote beach on the west side of Vancouver Island
Difficulty rating 1D
Enjoy a 2 hour drive to Bamfield, a tiny, unique, west
coast community on the
shores of Barkley Sound on the outside of
Vancouver Island. From the trail head, there is a one-
hour hike to a secluded beach through ancient old growth
cedar and hemlock forest. The vegetation is so tangled
you can imagine gnomes and fairies staring back at you!
It's a bit of a long trip, but when you get to the beach
you'll see it's worth it! There are fascinating
tide-pools with abundant life in them. There will be
time to do a little birding along the way and when we
get to the beach. Wet ground warning! The trip in can be
muddy! Hey, this is a rainforest. What did you expect?
We'll supply a gourmet lunch and refreshments as well as
rubber boots for those who want them. Be prepared for a
full 9-hour day of fun!
A hike
around a remote mountain lake
Difficulty rating 2C
On this ecotour, you'll journey up the Cameron Valley.
The Cameron River is the river that runs through
Cathedral Grove. On the drive, you'll enjoy great views
of one of the most spectacular mountains on Vancouver
island, Mount Arrowsmith. The trail is an easy one.
You'll hike around a sub-alpine lake called Labour Day
Lake. This lake is the source of the Cameron River. It is surrounded by
impressive old-growth montane (high
elevation) forest. You'll be able to picnic, swim and
relax beside the lake. The smells and forest is quite
different from the lowland forest. And the mountain
birds are a little different. This is where the Rainbird
(Varied Thrush) resides in the summer.
