See the Vancouver
Island Marmot

The Vancouver
Island is the rarest marmot in the world, and the rarest mammal
in Canada. Rainbird Excursions is offering a rare opportunity to
see the Vancouver Island Marmot in it's natural remote
mountain-top habitat. A portion of the funds generated from this
excursion will go to support the on-going Vancouver Island
Marmot Recovery Foundation. We can't guarantee sightings because
of weather and the natural behavior of the animals. But this is
as good a chance as it gets to experience what it is like to
live in the mountains with these animals.
Join us as we get
an early start by driving to the a trail head near the back end
of a mountain valley on central Vancouver Island. The trail
starts a an elevation of around 900 meters (1000 ft). The first
part is quite easy leading to a small lake. From there the
hiking gets very steep as we climb 500 vertical meters over less
than a kilometer in horizontal distance. After that the going
gets generally easier. The route is not well-marked, but your
guide knows the way well!
The marmots are not located on the
top of the mountain, but we still have the option to summit by
climbing another 200m. At the bottom after the climb down we may
refresh ourselves in the clear cold waters of the lake.
Below, a research crew
monitors activities of the marmots in the area.

Because of the deep mountain
snowpack these excursions cannot be offered until July or, on a
good year, late June.
Because of the exclusivity of
this excursion it demands a premium price.
