4 & 11 October 2008
Well, we
don't actually pick Magic Mushrooms. The tour is magical! This
is one of the most anticipated excursions Rainbird does. The
Magical Mushroom Tour features a gourmet meal by the top restaurant
in Port Alberni, the Batstar Cafe & Picnic, with the mushrooms
that were picked during afternoon. It is held during the peak of
the fall mushroom season. You should find, Boletes, Angel Wings,
many Yellow Chanterelles, Corals, Milkys and other more obscure
kinds. Don't worry your guide will not let you pick any
poisonous ones!

A big one! |
The mushroom tour will start at
12:30 and head to a secret location to pick. You will be
provided with pails and paring knives, or you can bring your
own. The weather could easily be a bit damp at this time of
year. All the better to grow mushrooms! So bring some wet
weather gear. The ground will be fairly level, but there will be
many bushes, logs to climb over, banks and short hills. So a
little agility would help you enjoy your experience.

You will be back in town by 4:30
to 5:00 PM. This will give you time to clean up a bit before
dinner. Ah, dinner! Chef Ron Storey, has learned from the best
chefs in Vancouver, and looks forward to pushing himself a bit
for you.

After dinner you can linger a bit
and take some time to examine some of the more obscure mushrooms
you discovered in the afternoon. There will be guide books
available to peruse. If you have taken any photos during the
afternoon, you can hook up you camera to the monitor in the
restaurant and look at them with the others.
