| Location: 15 minutes and 13 km (8
mi) west of Port Alberni on Highway 4. Description:
Sproat Lake Provincial Park a provincial park that is as popular
with the locals as it is with visitors. Located on the Northeast
shore of Sproat Lake, it has a large camping area, a boat ramp
and a sandy beach. A unique feature of the park is that it is
the location of an important set of petroglyphs or rock
carvings. The park gives access to the busiest part of Sproat
Lake where the warm waters in the summer encourage swimming,
waterskiing, and boating. Quieter parts of the lake are where
you can find excellent spots for trout fishing and camping.
There are also wonderful views of the Martin Mars
Water-bombers when they are moored on the lake. These planes,
built by Howard Hughes in the mid 1940's, are the largest of
their kind in the world. They are used to fight forest fires
mainly on Vancouver Island.
Nearest Town: Port Alberni is the third largest city
on Vancouver Island. All the amenities of urban living are there
including grocery and hardware stores, gas stations, motels,
restaurants, banks, and a hospital.
