| Location: 15 minutes Northwest of Port Alberni on
Beaver Creek Road off Highway 4. The drive from the turn
off is about 15 minutes. Description:
The most unique feature of Stamp River Provincial Park is Stamp
Falls, an impressive cataract that enters a canyon full of deep
pools. The old growth that surrounds the falls and the canyon
take you away to a glimpse of Vancouver Island as it was at the
time of first contact with the local First Nations. October is
the best time to visit to see the spectacle of nearly half a
million salmon lining up in the pool below the fish ladder. This
ladder allows them to ascend to the spawning gravel up-stream
and to Robertson Creek Fish Hatchery where some fish are taken
to enhance the fishery stocks in the river. A hiking trail
follows the top of the canyon. It is fenced to prevent an
accident fall into the water below.
There is also a a 23 site campground, picnic tables for day-use,
and pit toilets. The hiking trail extends along the top of the
canyon and also loops back along a ridge to the entrance road to
the park, making a 2 km loop.
