Your guide, Sandy McRuer, has lived in Port Alberni and worked in the area as a Forester and a Naturalist for 20 years. He has extensive knowledge of birds, plants and animals of Vancouver Island. He is trained in wilderness first aid. And he offers you his experience and unforgettable ecotours, birding and hiking trips to see the scenic beauty of the area.

  Sample Rainbird Nature Tours:

Pacific Rim Circle Tour: Rainbird takes you on an ecotour to Ucluelet on the outer coast of Vancouver Island.

Alberni Valley Waterfall Excursion: Visit 5 spectacular water-falls and a suspension bridge. Great summer time birding.

Tapaltos Beach Hike: This ecotour is a trip to Bamfield and a hike through old growth rainforest to a remote beach on the outer coast of North America.

Wild Mountain Lake Trip: Featuring a remote mountain lake, old growth rainforest, mountain scenery and hiking.

Taylor Arm Provincial Park

Location: On Highway 4, about 20 minutes or 21 km West of Port Alberni

Description: Taylor Arm Provincial Park is composed of two separate parcels of woodland along Sproat Lake. It is primarily a day-use park. But it does have a good sized group campground in the bigger and more eastern of the two parcels. It is big enough for 6 groups and comes equipped with a hand pump for water and pit toilets. Although the camping area is above the highway, there is a trail down to the lake through an underpass. At the lake there is a nice gravel beach.

The second parcel is almost 2 km west of the main entrance to the park. It is exclusively a day use area used primarily by locals for swimming and boating at the gravel beach. The nearest public boat launch, however, is at Sproat Lake Provincial Park some distance back toward Port Alberni. Both these parcels are preferred over Sproat Lake Provincial Park because of the absence of "swimmer's itch", a mildly irritating rash that disappears without treatment.
