| A Half-day Excursion to Experience Salmon Migration and Old Growth Forest There can be two no more iconic natural symbols of Vancouver Island than the salmon migration and the old forests of enormous trees that once clothed the mountains and valleys here. The fall is a special time to see both. On this tour you will see a special grove of fabulous old growth Douglas Fir by the Stamp River. The height of one of these behemoths was found to be among the tallest standing Douglas Fir in the province. Beside the big trees, we will see salmon on their spawning grounds too. But the real show for the salmon migration can be found at Stamp Falls where the Stamp River thunders over the rocks and into a boiling canyon below. Here in September and especially in October you can see the biggest species of salmon, the Chinook, leaping at the falls. In addition there is a fish ladder built in the mid-fifties to allow more salmon to reach the spawning grounds. You will see them crowded into the ladder and watch on a television monitor set up by the Department of Fisheries as they pass through it. $85.00 each + GST Port Alberni Start & Finish times: 9:00AM - 12:30 or 1:00PM - 4:30PM |
