April, May and June are exciting months throughout British Columbia for birding. And central 
Vancouver Island is no exception! The peak of the spring bird migration is during this time.
The birds are in their best breeding plumage and are easily seen.

You will have your choice of bird-watching on the East side of Vancouver Island, or the West side. Van-
couver Island specialties include Harlequin Duck, Brant, Marbled Murrelet, Pigeon Guillemot, 
Chestnut- backed Chickadee, Varied Thrush, Bewick's Wren and others. Other birds such as the Bald
Eagle, and a variety of sandpipers are common. Many of these birds are found only along the coast of
western North America.

Spring Birding is the most exciting time of year.

The only kind of Chickadee on Vancouver Island is the Chestnut-backed.

The Red-breasted Sapsucker is the western counterpart of the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker.

The Red-throated Loon breeds on Vancouver Island.

The Western Tanager is a colourful summer resident found high in the treetops.

Harlequin Ducks hang out along the ocean shoreline well into late spring before heading off to fast rivers to breed.
