| Mount Arrowsmith is one of the most popular mountains on the island to hike This is one of the most popular mountains to hike on Vancouver Island! Strangely though, there are no directional signs for finding the trail heads, and there are several of them. We drive over half way up the mountain and then climb to the "First Knuckle". Although the mountain is 1819 meters (5,968 ft) high the vertical distance we climb is only 800m. We start off by hiking up an old logging road up to the old growth timber. Then it gets steeper! But the hike isn't technical. Part way up there is a little plateau where we can take a rest. Then we resume the climb to the saddle between Mount Arrowsmith and Mount Cokely. The saddle is a fabulous area where wildflowers flourish and the mountain scenery is outstanding. After walking the ridge on the saddle we go up the final leg. It is perhaps the most challenging. It is still a hike as ropes and technical gear are not needed. We don’t quite get to the top, but you won’t miss it! There is a small plateau where we have lunch and admire the amazing views. You can see the outer pacific on a clear day, as well as the town of Port Alberni, the mountains of Strathcona Park, and the waters of the Straight of Georgia. $116.00 per person + GST Strenuous hiking - 4 hours up, 1.5 down!
